The department of Physics of Madura College is well known for teaching as well as research in the region. Established in 1948 with a UG course, the physics department is constantly striving for quality teaching right from the beginning and innovative research in recent years. Over the years, the department has grown into a centre for research offering doctoral programme in condensed matter physics and now designated as Research Centre and PG department of Physics.

Objectives

1. To develop the minds of the students by inculcating motivation for learning fundamentals at all levels, UG, PG and research.
2. To promote such minds to develop/innovate existing or emerging technologies for future needs.
3. To develop qualities focusing human values using rational thinking.

Academic Programmes

The aided department offers B.Sc. and M.Sc. in physics and Ph.D. programme in condensed matter physics with several specialized research areas. The strength of teaching faculty in aided stream is eleven (11) of which seven (8) members are doctorates. The self-finance stream of the department offers B.Sc., M.Sc., and M.Phil. programmes in physics, which has a strength of eleven (11) teaching staff. The number of aided supporting staff for the laboratories is four (4). The department has 3 separate spacious laboratories for conducting practical classes of the academic programmes, one for PG, two for UG courses. Each year, forty (40) students are admitted in first year UG courses both in aided and self finance stream. A total of twenty (20) students are admitted in the PG courses in both streams. A limited number are students are admitted in the M.Phil. programme each year. For the Ph.D. programmes, selection is made through an entrance examination as per the norms of Madurai Kamaraj University. The department has a lending library with around 5000 books which are distributed to UG and PG students. The department has been awarded and funded to the tune of ~Rs. 21 lakhs through the FIST programme of DST, utilizing which various laboratory instruments and research facilities have been established including a computer laboratory.

Research Programmes

Physics department became a research centre in 2004. As on 2016, eight (8) Ph.D. scholars and around fifty (50) M.Phil. scholars have been produced. The research areas of the department includes condensed matter physics, X-ray crystallography and thin film physics. At present, the department has four (4) teaching faculty members recognized as research supervisors by the parent Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai. The specialized experimental areas of research include sample/crystal preparation/growth of novel materials of technological importance, which include piezo electric ceramics, ceramic oxides, semiconductors for spintronics, optical materials etc. As on 2016, a total number of eighteen (18) research scholars are working for their Ph.D. degree under the supervision of the recognized supervisors. The research equipments such as, high temperature vacuum furnace, high vacuum generating units, thin film coating units, glass sealing unit, ceramic pelletizing machine and other facilities are being used by the M.Sc. students for their project work which is mandatory for the final year M.Sc. students, M.Phil. scholars for their mandatory research project work and various research programmes of the supervisors. The total number of research level books (as monographs), published by the department is eight (8), which have been published by reputed publishing agencies including Springer(UK), Lambert Academic (Germany) Trans Tech Publishers (Germany), Materials Research Forum (USA) etc. The research results are routinely published in reputed international Journals with high impact factors published by Elsevier, Springer, Taylor and Francis, MRF and other publishers. Some of the teaching faculty members of the department have attracted research funds to the tune of ~Rs.35 lakhs in the form of projects by funding agencies like UGC, CSIR, and NRB of DRDO. Some teaching members are reviewers of research articles from publishers like Elsevier and have reviewed numerous research articles.
