National Service Scheme (NSS)


National Service Scheme popularly known as NSS, the scheme was launched in Mahatma Gandhi Centenary year 1969 and aimed at developing student’s personality through community service. The overall objective of National Service is educational. This objective is attained through the service to the community.

National Service Scheme (NSS) is a permanent Youth Programme under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India and funded by Government of Tamilnadu and Government of India in the ratio 5:7.


Objectives

The overall objective of NSS is Personality Development through community service.
The broad objectives of NSS are to:

  •  Understand the community in which they work.
  •  Understand themselves in relation to their community.
  •  Identify the needs and problems of the community and involve them in problem solving process.
  •  Develop among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility.
  •  Utilize their knowledge in finding practical solution to individual and community problems.
  •  Develop competence required for group-living and sharing of responsibilities.
  •  Gain skills in mobilizing community participation.
  •  Acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitude.
  •  Develop capacity to meet emergencies and natural disaster and
  •  Practice national integration and social harmony.

Highlights of NSS In Our College


There are seven units in our college comprising of 100 students in each unit constituting a total of 700 students.
The students actively participate in various social services which are laid as under:

  •  NSS volunteers participate regularly in scribe writing for visually challenged students.
  •  The students actively involved in traffic control duty at in front of the College Campus and near the Periyar Bus stand.
  •  Every year nearly 10 students participate in Kanyakumari for 4 days camp for ‘Youth Development’ organized by Vivekananda Kendra.
  •  Students actively involve in various awareness programme like Drug Awareness, Plastic Eradication, Green Revolution and so forth.
  •  Every year 4 to 5 students participate in Walkathon and Mini Marathon on January 2015.
  •  NSS volunteers involve themselves in various National celebrations like Gandhi Jeyanthi , Republic Day, Independence Day and also in various events organized by the college like, Women’s Day celebrations, Pongal Day celebrations etc.,
  •  Every year NSS volunteers develop among themselves in mobilizing various community participation like ‘Samabandhi Bojanam’ at Meenakshi Sundareswar Temple, visit to old age home and orphanage home and act as scribe writers for visually challenged students.
  •  As a sense of social and civic responsibility NSS volunteers involve actively in various environmental awareness campaign and by planting saplings in and around the college campus.
  •  Students attended in the One Day State Level Workshop on ‘Disaste Management’ organized by National Service Scheme of E.M.G.Yadava Women’s College, Madurai on September, 2015.
  •  Meenakshi Mission Hospital awarded an Appreciation Shield to NSS Madura College for conducting Blood Donation Camp in October,2012.
  •  M.Manikandan, NSS Volunteer received the University NSS Award by Madurai Kamaraj University in the year 2012-13.
  •  Dr.V.Sriman Narayanan, Programme Officer, received the University NSS Award offered by Madurai Kamaraj University in the year 2012-13.
  •  Dr. V. Sriman Narayanan, Programme Officer, participated in the National level, “NSS Mega Camp 2013” at Bangalore organized by Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India, New Delhi.
  •  4 Students volunteers participated in the NSS Youth Exchange and Home Stay Programme at Arunachal Pradesh on Sep. 2013.
  •  Mr.V.Senthil, NSS Volunteer, received the University NSS Award by Madura Kamaraj University for the year 2011-12.
  •  Mr.V.Senthil, NSS Volunteer, received the State NSS Award as Best Volunteer by the Government of Tamilnadu for the year 2011-12.
  •  Mr.V.Senthil, NSS Volunteerr, received the Indira Gandhi NSS Award by Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports for the year 2012-13.
  •  Dr.R.Gopi, Programme officer, participated in the National Level “NSS-Mega Summer Camp 2010” at Sriperimpudur, jointly organized by Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India, New Delhi.
  •  Dr.R.Gopi, Programme Officerreceived the University NSS Award offered by Madurai Kamaraj University in the year 2010-11.
  •  Dr.R.Gopi Programme Officre received the State NSS Award as Best Program Officer by the Government of Tamil Nadu in the year 2010-11.
